The simplest way to debug is to put. HTML Made Simple - Code. Project. Introduces a beginning webmaster to the basics but essentials of many HTML topics. Getting Started with HTML - First Things First. So you want to learn HTML? You have been surfing the net for a couple of months now, and you can't stop thinking about how these genius webmasters design web sites and keep them going on the net. Well, in all actuality, designing a website is not a five- year project. With a little creativity and desire, you could have a personal site running on your computer within ten minutes of reading the first couple of sections in this tutorial.
Don't get me wrong, with the new programming languages constantly arising, the sites you see on the net by major companies require knowledge of a much more complex programming language or combination of languages. However, you don't need knowledge of complex web programming languages to tailor a website to meet your needs and look professional while doing it. HTML provides the basic tools for designing a simple, professional website, and it can easily be self taught. HTML (Hyper. Text Markup Language) is a web programming language designed to create web documents or web pages. Based upon SGML (Standard Generalized Markup Language), HTML's basic concept involves the use of . All HTML documents consist of a mix and match of HTML . Tags only aid in describing the document content or text, and thus leave the actual appearance and layout decisions for a web browser to handle when the web page is rendered or opened. HTML documents are plain- text files that can be created using any basic or high- level text editor, such as Notepad, Text. Pad, or Microsoft Word or any other HTML authoring program. When you create an HTML document, you must save it with a . Create secure and sharable online database using Zoho Creator online database software. Data collection made simple. Stripped and downsized to the bare necessities, but still very powerful. By default, most text editors save documents with a . The . html or . htm extension allows the document to be rendered and displayed by a browser. Unfortunately for web designers, web documents are browser dependent; sometimes, different browsers display content differently. A document may look crisp and clean in Internet Explorer, but it may have a slightly different look in Netscape, or vice versa. Web page designers should make every attempt to create portable HTML documents that can be opened by many different web browsers while showing little or no visual differences. Reliable HTML web pages are created by following all syntax rules and understanding which tags are supported by all web browsers. So, what does a person need to create a web page? A simple text editor, and a web browser. In most cases, a web page, or web site which is a collection of related web pages, should be designed locally on a computer first, and then once completed, the web documents and files may be uploaded for publishing on the World Wide Web. This makes web site or web page creation, extremely easier than trying to edit existing documents on the WWW. Before reading further and learning actual HTML code, you should become familiar with the following short listing of terms: HTML - short for Hyper. Text Markup Language; basic programming language of the World Wide Web based upon SGML (Standard Generalized Markup Language). You now have a brief background of HTML and are ready to dig deep into the core of the language. The next section will show you how to create your first web page document. Read on for more about where you should begin.. Ground Zero - Where Do I Begin? Every HTML document should contain the basic document structure tags, which include < html> < /html> , < head> < /head> and < body> < /body>. The heading contains the title, which is displayed in the title bar of a browser, and the body contains the elements that are made up of text, images, paragraphs, tables, lists and any other legal HTML element. Not every browser supports all HTML tags; however, if the tag is not supported, the browser simply ignores it and doesn't take it into account when interpreting the document. HTML is also not case sensitive, which means < b. ODy> is the same as < BODY> or < body> , but it is highly recommended to use a consistent tag writing style. The standard writing convention is for all tags to be written in lowercase. The following depicts the document structure elements that every web document should contain: < html> < head> < title> < /title> < /head> < body> < /body> < /html> Open a simple text editor program such as Notepad on a Windows machine, copy and paste the above code into the editor, save the file with a . Congratulations, you have now created your very first web page. Upon opening of the above HTML code example in a web browser, a blank white or gray screen should appear in the content area of the browser. Well, no elements have yet been provided in the document other than the basic document structure tags. By default, web browsers display text in black, hyperlinks in blue, and the background in white or gray, with top and bottom margins set at 1. To override these default values, simply alter the values of the corresponding < body> standard tag attributes. The following attributes can be manipulated in the < body> tag of a document. Standard Attributesbackground=. FFFFFF is white. Finding a specific color using random number and letter combinations can be unintuitive. A free online resource to track the combinations that make specific colors is available here. Most high level paint programs such as Paint Shop Pro 5 have the capability of calculating the hexadecimal values of thousands of colors. Not only does a good paint program come in handy when finding hexadecimal values, but it is also a great tool for creating custom images for web pages. The following displays some of the more basic colors and their corresponding hexadecimal values: Examples of Hexadecimal Colors. Black- #0. 00. 00. Gray- #C0. C0. C0. Light Gray- #E8. E8. E8. You can also provide a background image that will be displayed in the background of your document instead of a solid color, by using the background=. For example, if an image named stone. HTML files or uploaded on a web server, a person could use the following code: < bodybackground=. Since the image is displayed in a . For a web page example, follow the above steps and insert the following HTML code in place of the document structure tags. Note: See later sections for tags not covered in this section: < html> < head> < title> My First Web Page - HTML is simple!< /title> < /head> < bodybgcolor=. HTML is easy!< /h. By now, you should have already created your first web page document. I told you it wasn't difficult. The next section introduces you to several . Read on for more about tags.. HTML Tags - It's All About Tags. Since HTML stems from the basic concept of using tags, the more a designer becomes familiar with various tags, the better that designer will be able to create customized web pages. HTML tags are made up of a left angle bracket ( < ), a tag name and a right angle bracket ( > ). Tags normally have a start and end tag but some tags only need a beginning tag to function. The end tag is identical to the start tag with a backslash ( / ) preceding the text between the angle brackets. The general form of a tag is as follows: < tag. Name> < /tag. Name> where tag. Name is the name of the tag element. Some elements may include additional instructions in the start tag, called attributes. Attributes give additional information about the element to the web browser. The following is a brief overview of the basic document structure HTML tags: < html> < /html> This element simply notifies the web browser that the document contains HTML- coded information (hypertext). This is also indicated by the . All other elements will be placed within the beginning and ending < html> tags.< head> < /head> This element identifies the beginning of the HTML document commonly called the heading region. It contains the title tag and may perhaps contain other scripting language code such as Java, Java. Script, CSS, etc., to be . Note that the title is not displayed within the content area of the browser. Web page titles should be very descriptive and meaningful because it is used if a visitor bookmarks the document as a favorite web link.< body> < /body> This element contains the content elements of the document that is to be displayed in the content area of a web browser.< !- - - -> This is the comment tag which is used for documentation purposes. Documentation refers to statements in the HTML source code that do not affect the code itself, and generally used for describing the purpose of particular code segments. Placing comments in HTML source code is vital when working with complex code containing many different elements. It also helps the web designer and other code viewers understand what certain code segments are accomplishing. It is a good web programming practice to use adequate source code comments, and it is a good habit to get into if pursuing other programming languages. Document structure tags define the global regions of a web page but do nothing to describe web page content. The following are some useful document formatting tags and text tags designed to . Everything placed between the start and end < center> tags will be centered on the screen or centered in its current cell space.

View Source: Advanced CSS Rollovers. To make a Web page more visually exciting, Web designers often use images that change appearance when a mouse is moved over it. You can use rollover images to spice up a navigation bar by making graphical buttons highlight when moused over. Or, for a simple visual effect, you could have a black and white photo change to a color image when a visitor mouses over the picture. Traditionally, Web designers have relied on Java. Script programming to make this kind of magic happen. By writing a Java. Script program you can swap one image for another; many Web design programs, such as Dreamweaver, include menu commands to simplify the process of adding the necessary Java. Script. Fortunately, there’s an even easier method of creating rollover images — one that doesn’t require any Java. Script to work. Cascading Style Sheets, a Web designer’s most powerful design tool, provide a very simple method for creating a rollover image effect. In a nutshell, CSS lets you place an image in the background of any HTML element. In this case, you add a background image (a graphical button, for example) to a link. CSS also lets you style the appearance of a link when the mouse hovers over the link. Interactive Rollovers in Adobe ImageReady. ImageReady is an awfully underutilized program for developing. How to create faster CSS rollovers without any image preload. Fast Rollovers Without Preload. This useful feature of CSS means you can change a link’s background image when the mouse rolls over the link (Figure 1). Figure 1. Forget Java. Script — you can create dynamic rollover images using just CSS. Click here to see a live demo. The exact process of creating CSS rollovers is a little more involved than that, so I’ll teach you step- by- step how to create them. In addition, you’ll learn a nifty technique for avoiding one problem often associated with CSS rollovers: the delayed appearance of the rollover image. First, A Little Background. To create a CSS rollover, you need to understand the CSS properties that control the background. CSS lets you control the color of the background, add an image to the background, specify how or whether the background image repeats, and dictate a precise position for the image. To add an image to the background of a CSS rule, use the background- image property. This property requires a path to the particular image you wish to use. Say you’re creating a style for a particular link; you’ve added an ID name to the link so you might have HTML like this: < a href=”homepage. Home< /a>. To add an image to the background of that link, you’d create a CSS rule like this: Note for Dreamweaver users: you can set all of the CSS background properties when you create a style in Dreamweaver. Just select the “Background” category in the “CSS Rule Definition” window. Because background images will tile left to right and top to bottom, you can make the image appear only a single time (a good idea if the background image is a single button with obvious edges): Finally, you can control the placement of the image within the background of the HTML element you’re styling by using the background- position property. So to place the image in the top left corner of the element, you’d write this: The first number of the background position represents where the left edge of the image is placed in relation to the left edge of the element. The second number identifies the position of the top edge of the image in relation to the top edge of the element. Getting Started. Now that you understand the basics of the CSS background properties, it’s time to put this knowledge to work and create a navigation bar with CSS rollovers. To follow along with these instructions, click on the bolded phrase below to download the folder, then double- click on the folder to uncompress its files. For a refresher on the process of defining a site see last month’s View Source. In a Web browser, open the file start. This Web page contains the navigation bar you will be adding rollover images to. Use images from the web or your PC. Load the image, map out your links and get the code! A few basic styles have already been applied to the page and the navbar: For example, the bullets before each list item are gone and underlines below each link have been removed. Before you add any background images, you’ll turn this vertical nav bar into a horizontal nav bar with links placed side by side. Just a few CSS properties are enough to get the job done. In your favorite Web page editing program, open the file styles. Add the following new rule to the file: This style’s name — #navbar li — is called a descendent selector in CSS- speak. That means this style will apply to any list item (the li tag) that’s contained inside another HTML tag that has the ID navbar applied to it. In this case, the bulleted list (the < ul> tag in HTML) has an ID name of navbar, so this style will affect all items inside the bulleted list. The float property makes the bulleted list items line up side- by- side. Next, edit the last style — #navbar a — so that it looks like this: This is another example of a descendent selector. In this case, the style #navbar a applies to any link (the a tag) inside another HTML tag with the ID name navbar — the ID applied to the bulleted list. The display: block property treats each link as its own block of content. Normally, links are treated as elements inside some other block of content — for example, a linked word can sit on the same line as other text inside a paragraph. The main benefit of setting the link’s display property to block is that it lets you control the height and width of each link accurately. Adding a Background Image. The files accompanying this tutorial include graphical buttons for each link. Each button has the text of the link on it, so you need to specify different background images for each link. The best way to do this is to add a little identifying information to each link’s HTML. Open the file start. Web editing program. Locate the following line of HTML: Add id=”home” to the opening < a> tag so that the HTML looks like this: This step provides a unique name for that link, so that you can write a CSS rule that will specifically control the look of that one link. Now you’ll create a CSS rule that adds the background image to the link. Open the file styles. You’ll notice a couple of peculiar things (circled in Figure 2). First, only a small portion of the button is visible; and second, the text “Home” sits on top of the text of the button. Figure 2. To fully display a background image, the styled element must provide a large enough space to display the entire image. In this case, the entire “Home” button isn’t visible because the area of the screen dedicated to the “Home” link isn’t large enough. Background images only fill as much space as is available. In this case, the link (the text “Home”) takes up only a small space on the page. Since the button is larger than that space, it isn’t entirely visible. To fix this, you simply set the link’s width and height to match the width and height of the graphical button. In the styles. css file, edit the #navbar #home style so that it looks like this: In this case, the graphic used is 3. For your own rollovers, you’ll specify a height and width that matches the graphic you create. If you create a navigation bar composed of several buttons you’ll most likely find that each button has a different width depending on each button’s text. Hiding the Link’s Text. At this point, the entire width and height of the button is visible. Unfortunately, the text “Home” is still floating on top of the button. You’ll learn how to hide that text in a moment, but you may be wondering why that text is there in the first place. When using images for navigation, it’s a good idea to also include some straightforward HTML text. This is the purpose of the < img> tag’s alt attribute — it provides a text description of an image so that search engines and screen readers (software that reads Web pages out loud to those with vision impairments) can decipher an image’s purpose. In this case, the HTML text for this link “Home” will come in handy when Web search engines crawl the site — since search engines ignore CSS, the only way they can know the purpose of each link is by scanning the HTML. Likewise, Web surfers using screen readers will still be able to navigate the site. Fortunately, CSS provides an easy way to hide the link text and display just the graphical button. Open the styles. css file and edit the #navbar a style so that it looks like this: The line you just added moves the text of each link 5. In other words, this tricky little maneuver moves the text so far to the left that it’s no longer visible on the screen. The CSS text- indent property controls where the first line of a paragraph of text is positioned. Since the property has no control over the actual position of the link, the button graphic doesn’t move. This is an example of a CSS technique known as “image replacement” and is commonly used to replace a text headline with a graphic that uses more elegant typography. Rollover Magic. Finally, you’ve arrived at the rollover part of this tutorial. CSS lets you control the look of a link based on how a user interacts with the link. There are four states, called pseudo- classes, that you can control: a: linka: visiteda: hovera: active. A: link refers to the look of a plain, unvisited link. A: visited is the look of a link after the user has already been to the linked page; in this way you can make a link change appearance (for example, grey out the link) to indicate that the user has been there. A: active refers to the time when the user presses the mouse button down on the link. The one we’re interested in is a: hover. This pseudo- class lets you define the look of a link as the mouse hovers over it. Say, for example, you wish to make all links on a page turn purple when moused over. You could then add this style to your site’s style sheet: That CSS rule will affect all links on a page. If you want to be more selective and control the look of a single link, you could apply an ID to the HTML for that link, then create a style that refers to that ID. About Marquette University . History. Marquette began as a dream of the Most Rev. John Martin Henni the first Catholic bishop of Milwaukee, but it took a trip overseas to find an investor to make it a reality. Belgian businessman Guillaume Joseph De. Buey promised $1. Jacques Marquette, S. J., opened on Aug. Bishop Henni died just two days later, one might guess satisfied that his work was finished. Throughout the years, thousands of students have passed through Marquette's halls and classrooms, aspiring to achieve academic success and a spiritual foundation to last a lifetime. Marquette was founded in the rich tradition of the Society of Jesus, a Catholic religious order established in 1. St. The university is named after Rev. Jacques Marquette, S. J. Our mission, therefore, is the search for truth, the discovery and sharing of knowledge, the fostering of personal and professional excellence, the promotion of a life of faith, and the development of leadership expressed in service to others. All this we pursue for the greater glory of God and the common benefit of the human community. Excellence. Our students, whether traditional or non- traditional, undergraduate, graduate or professional, come to Marquette University to share our commitment to the pursuit of excellence in all things as a lifelong endeavor. They come to join a community whose members — faculty, staff, students, trustees, alumni and friends alike — believe that education must encompass the whole person: spiritual and moral as well as intellectual, the heart as well as the mind. And they come seeking the educational, professional and cultural advantages of a university located in the heart of the city. We, in turn, take seriously our responsibility to foster and support excellence in teaching and research, to keep a Marquette education accessible to a diverse population of students, and to offer personal attention and care to each member of the Marquette community. Faith. As a Catholic university, we are committed to the unfettered pursuit of truth under the mutually illuminating powers of human intelligence and Christian faith. Our Catholic identity is expressed in our choices of curricula, our sponsorship of programs and activities devoted to the cultivation of our religious character, our ecumenical outlook, and our support of Catholic beliefs and values. Precisely because Catholicism at its best seeks to be inclusive, we are open to all who share our mission and seek the truth about God and the world, and we are firmly committed to academic freedom as the necessary precondition for that search. We welcome and benefit enormously from the diversity of seekers within our ranks, even as we freely choose and celebrate our own Catholic identity. Leadership. As a Jesuit university, Marquette embodies the intellectual and religious traditions of the Society of Jesus. Through an academically rigorous, values- centered curriculum, our students receive a firm grounding in the liberal arts, preparation for work in a world of increasing complexity and diversity, and formation for life as ethical and informed leaders in their religious, cultural, professional and civic communities. They work with and learn from faculty who are true teacher- scholars, whose research not only advances the sum of human knowledge, but also informs their teaching, and whose commitment to students is fundamental to their intellectual and professional lives. Service. Through both our academic and co- curricular programs, Marquette strives to develop men and women who will dedicate their lives to the service of others, actively entering into the struggle for a more just society. We expect all members of the Marquette community, whatever their faith traditions, to give concrete expression to their beliefs by giving of themselves in service to those in need. If you’re keen to learn more about PDFs and documents, you may find this recent article on creating an HTML5 document editor of great interest. Ahead Of The Game. One of the reasons I like PHP so much is its consistent support for new technologies. The language invites extensibility, making it easy for developers to add new modules to the core engine, and widespread community support has made PHP one of the most full- featured Web programming languages around, with support for a wide variety of modular extensions. Extensions available today allow developers to use PHP to perform IMAP and POP3 operations; dynamically construct images and Shockwave Flash movies; perform credit card validation; encrypt sensitive data; and parse XML- encoded data. CakePHP Documentation. This will generate all the documentation in an HTML form. Cakephp generate PDF download. What is CakePHP According to the official. Helper classes help generate HTML and JavaScript code. This isn’t all, though. One of the more interesting items currently being bundled with PHP is the PDFLib extension, which allows developers to dynamically generate documents in Adobe Portable Document Format (PDF). Over the next few pages, I’m going to take a quick look at this module, providing you with a brief overview of its functions and demonstrating how you can use it in your PHP development. So come on in, and let’s get going! Getting Started. In order to use PHP’s PDF manipulation capabilities, you need to have the PDFLib library installed on your system. If you’re working on Linux, you can download a copy from http: //www. If you’re running Windows, your job is even simpler – a pre- built PDF library is bundled with your distribution, and all you need to do is activate it by uncommenting the appropriate lines in your PHP configuration file. Additionally, you’ll need a copy of the (free!) Adobe Acrobat PDF reader, so that you can view the documents created via the PDFLib library. You can download a copy of this reader from http: //www. Once you’ve got everything in place, it’s time to create a simple PDF file. Here goes: < ? PDF document $pdf = pdf. PHP will execute the script, and a new PDF file will be created and stored in the location specified at the top of the script. Here’s what you’ll see when you open the file: Anatomy Lesson. Let’s take a closer look at the code used in the example above. Creating a PDF file in PHP involves four basic steps: creating a handle for the document; registering fonts and colours for the document; writing or drawing to the handle with various pre- defined functions; and saving the final document. Let’s take the first step . This handle is then used in all subsequent operations involving the PDF document. Next up, you need to give the PDF file a name – this is accomplished via the pdf. In case math isn’t your strong suit, the PHP manual provides width and height measurements for most standard page sizes, including A4, the one used in the example above. In between the calls to pdf. In this case, all I’m doing is writing a line of text to the document – so all I need to do is pick a font, and then use that font to write the text string I need to the document. Selecting and registering a font is accomplished via the pdf. These coordinates are specified with respect to the origin (0,0), which is located at the bottom left corner of the document. Once the text has been written, the page is closed via a call to pdf. You can then add one or more extra pages, or – as I’ve done here – simply close the document via pdf. This will save the document contents to the file specified in the initial call to pdf. Since a picture is worth a thousand words, consider this next example, which demonstrates the process of adding an image to your newly- minted PDF document.< ? PDF document $pdf = pdf. The first one accepts an image type – GIF, JPEG, TIFF or PNG – and file name as arguments, and returns an image handle, which may then be re- used multiple times in the document. The image handle returned in the previous step can be used by the pdf. The coordinates provided to this function (the second and third arguments) refer to the position of the lower left corner of the image, while the fourth argument specifies the scaling factor to use when displaying the image (a scaling factor of 1 will show the image at actual size, while a factor of 0. Selection from CakePHP 2 Application Cookbook . FPDF is a PHP class which allows to generate PDF files with pure PHP. FPDF has other advantages: high level functions. Here is a list of its main. CakePHP The Rapid Development PHP Framework. CakePHP was created by Michal Tatarynowicz On April 15. Helps generate non-HTML files such as PDFs, RSS feeds, etc. The Shortest Distance Between Two Points. Why stop there? PHP’s PDF extension comes with a whole bag of functions designed to let you draw lines, circles and other shapes in your PDF document. Consider the following example, which demonstrates the process of drawing a line.< ? PDF document $pdf = pdf. In order to do this, I first need to place the cursor at the starting point (2. So, if I wanted to set red (RGB: 2. Take a look at the following example, which demonstrates.< ? PDF document $pdf = pdf. This rectangle has then been filled and outlined in two different colours, via the pdf. Consider the following one, in which a couple of “for” loops have been combined with the pdf. The following example demonstrates: < ? PDF document $pdf = pdf. The following example demonstrates how PHP can accept numeric data and turn it into a graph – specifically, a multi- coloured pie chart. The form below asks for a series of data “slices”, in the form of numeric data, separated by commas. Once you’ve entered a few numbers, the “pie. PDF document containing a pie chart, marking out the different pie slices and filling them with different colours.< html>. Pie Chart Generator< /h. A loop then converts these numbers into degrees of a circle, and draws arcs for each slice. In each iteration of the loop, the coordinate of the end point of the arc is also calculated and a line segment in drawn to demarcate the arc from the rest of the circle. Once the pie segment has been drawn, the pdf. And while you’re enjoying yourself, I’ll bid you adieu. Examples are illustrative only, and are not meant for a production environment.
